The treatment is 70 percent diet modification and 30 percent exercise. Ensure your diet is low in transfat \u2013 so say no to junk food and sugar \u2013 and increase the share of protein,\u201d said <strong><em>Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour, Founder &amp; Director, SCI Healthcare, New Delhi<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe general conception is women who have PCOS are stressed due to the lack or absence of periods. However, it is the other way round \u2013 these women are generally more stressed than others because they are constantly reminded by people around them of their difference, either due to the physical features such as unwanted hair growth or irregular periods. The stress level in these women vary, so some take more time to respond to treatment than others. Now with the lockdown, they are at home and this is an opportunity to talk to the family about the condition \u2013 family should be helpful to these women. These women also need constant counseling. It is advisable they do everything possible to keep their stress level down \u2013 be that reading or meditation,\u201d<strong><em> Dr. S. Krishnakumar, Chief Consultant, J.K. So, we avoid going ahead for any treatment for infertility or IVF and advice for oral treatment. We advise our patients to utilize this time of lockdown and bring some lifestyle changes, an exercise which will help in improving their PCOD or infertility,\u201d said <strong><em>Dr. Sujoy Dasgupta, Consultant, Reproductive Medicine, Genome Fertility Centre, Kolkata<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The virtual summit on PCOS and infertility treatment during the ongoing lockdown, organized by the <strong>Integrated Health and Wellbeing (IHW) Council<\/strong>, was attended by Dr. K.U. The only infertility treatment allowed now is for cancer patients who want to freeze their sperms or eggs. Once the lockdown is lifted, we will prioritize the cases with advanced maternal age or where the gamete has been frozen for a long time,\u201d <strong><em>Dr.<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Gour<\/em><\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Discussing access to the right kind of healthcare during lockdown as a challenge, <strong><em>Dr. Durga Rao, Co-Founder &amp; Medical Director, Oasis Fertility, Hyderabad<\/em><\/strong> said<strong><em>,<\/em><\/strong>\u201cA woman\u2019s location has become a crucial factor in providing the treatment as those who are living in an area identified as a hotspot or containment zone not only need to take extra care to prevent infection but also need to ensure they can access antenatal care in a hospital set up. It is difficult for her to get the right kind of healthcare as it calls for a rigorous set of measures. Women in these areas should try to conceive naturally while high-risk pregnancies need access to good healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was sixth in the series of virtual summits being held by the IHW Council, a premier think tank that advocates for a healthy world through multilateral stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Mr. Kamal Narayan, CEO, IHW Council<\/em><\/strong>, who also moderated the session, said, \u201cJust like maternal care cannot wait due to lockdown, couples who are undergoing treatment for infertility also need to continue their regime and decide on the next step based on the specialist\u2019s intervention, which is the same for those undergoing treatment for polycystic ovary. However, the lockdown has restricted their visits to the doctor\u2019s chambers and can disrupt the entire treatment. The panelists at the summit shared their views on how people can maintain the rhythm of the treatment and the future they see post the lockdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The doctors said that the pandemic may alter the way infertility treatment is provided and new guidelines are needed keeping in mind the scientific facts. \u201cOnce the lockdown is lifted, we will need strict guidelines in place as social distancing is likely to become the norm. The process of framing the guidelines should start now so that it can be transmitted to the audience and they can get used to it.
